IIº  SOUTH AMERICA-U.S. SYMPOSIUM ON LAW AND JUSTICE

Stetson University Tampa Florida / Florida Coastal School of Law Jacksonville Florida
Center for Law and Public Policy

JUNE 2007

The Florida Coastal School of Law Center for Law and Public Policy, and the Stetson University college of Law will present a symposium and short course for the participants in a delegation visiting from various judicial circuits in Argentina, including the City and Province of Buenos Aires, Mercedes and Usuahia, Tierra Del Fuego.

Represented in the delegation are distinguished jurists and lawyers including judges, lawyers, members of Unidos Por la Justicia, (a non-governmental organization (NGO) concerned with judicial reform),   and representatives of the following organizations:  Colegio de Mgistrados de la Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires (Judges’ Association), Federación Argentina de la Magistratura (judges’ association from all the country—all provinces), Asociación Nacional Mujeres Juezas (National Association for Women Judges), and the Universidad Católica Argentina (The Catholic University).  The symposium is the product of a collaborative initiative between Argentina legal institutions and the FCSL Center for Law and Public Policy, with the colaboration of the Stetson University.

The idea was first proposed during the week-long visit of Center Executive Director, Eric Smith, to Buenos Aires and Cordoba in August of 2003, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Subsequently, the first South America-U.S. Symposium on Law and Justice program with 16 participants was presented April 5-7, 2006.

Dr. Santiago Otamendi and Dr. Luis Velasco suggested the symposium/short course might serve as a pilot program which could be extended in the future to other countries in Central and South America for legal education in the United States and this second symposium represents another step in that direction.

The symposium and short course will feature lectures from distinguished professors, visits to state and federal courthouses and conferences with numerous judges.  Participants will visit with judges for the 4th Judicial Circuit of Florida and the United States District Court and Magistrate Judges for the Middle District of Florida.

Also included will be a tour of the City of Jacksonville’s Victim Services Center and the correctional facilities in Duval County (John Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility).

Academic Coordination: Patricia Gomez (Stetson University), Eric Smith (Florida Coastal School of Law), Santiago Otamendi (Unidos por la Justicia).
